What Is the Outside Midfielder Role in 7v7 Soccer?
Clear roles, positioning, and quick drills for wingers in 7v7 youth soccer.
Key Takeaways
- Stretch the Field on Offense – Outside midfielders stay wide near the sideline to create space, making it easier for teammates to pass, dribble, or attack through the middle.
- Work Both Ways – They must contribute in attack (dribbling, passing inside, crossing) and on defense (marking, tackling, and blocking passing lanes).
- Always Moving Great outside midfielders are constantly running, adjusting their position to keep the team balanced and connected between defense and attack.

In 7v7 soccer, the outside midfielder's job is to be the connection between our defense and attack along their side of the field. When our team has the ball, their job is to give the team width by being as close to their sideline as possible. This stretches the field so there's more space in the middle of the field and in between the other team's defenders. Making this space allows more areas to pass and dribble the ball.
The three jobs on offense for an outside midfielder are:
- Dribble down the line.
- Pass inside to move the ball upfield.
- Cross the ball into the box for a shot on goal.
On defense, they help protect their side by marking opponents, making tackles, and blocking passing lanes. It's super important when we lose the ball to sprint back to support our defenders.
It's true—an outside midfielder is always moving. Their location on the field grows or shrinks our team's web-like shape, allowing us a better opportunity to attack or defend.
So remember: run fast, work hard, and help us defend as a team.
